Come on Son

Come on son, over we go, don’t be afraid of the foe

I don’t want to go; I don’t want to show the fear that lives in me

Don’t worry son, we all feel fear and many a time we’ve shed a tear

Why does it have to be this way, killing each other every day?

It’s life on earth son, it’s gone astray

I’m over the top, I’m on my way the bullets keep coming and I’ve lost my way

All I can see is the colour gray

The smoke is so thick it makes me sick

But somehow I’v found my way

I’m fighting through another day

The ground is red with the blood of men

My buddies lie beneath my feet

Gone forever in the long dark sleep

I’m broken hearted and feel alone

I miss me mam, I miss me dad, me life is flying through me head

I just wanna be in me bed and shut my eyes so it will go away and when I await it’s another day

Me mate that’s with me keeps urgning me on, come on son, you need to run

It all went quiet when I fired me gun

I looked around and saw this bloke the bullet I fired had hit his throat

I held his hand till he was gone, gone like a long lost song, never to be heard again

O God what have I done he was just a lad like me?

It’s like hell on earth this war we’re in

Then it all went quiet it all went still, the grey was gone and the sky was blue, the sound of laughter reached my ears

I heard this noise say ‘No more Tears’ and I looked, I saw this bloke, this bloke I shot in the throat, not only him but hundreds more

Just like the sand on the sea shore, they look so happy, so content

And there he was my mate again, his face was radian like the morning sun

The smell of roses filled the air, the Rose of Sharon was truly there

I’m home at least and peace abounds

We never see the wars gain, never hear the sound of dying men trampled on the ground
